Westlaw.com and Other Websites Affected by Microsoft's Latest Patch

Service Pack May Install Automatically

Microsoft's latest Service Pack 2 for Windows XP focuses on security and will install automatically for users who have turned on the automatic update feature of Windows XP.

Pop-Ups Disabled

An upgrade to SP2 will impact your ability to print or email documents from Westlaw.com and related platforms. There are currently a few workarounds that will alleviate any issues caused by the upgrade to SP2. The main issue that you will encounter after the upgrade is that the Pop-Up Blocker functionality will prevent ALL pop-ups... including those for printing from westlaw.com. 

 

      Consider Forgoing SP2  

Because of the numerous problems caused by service pack 2 (see BOC’s previous newsletter article), you may want to consider not installing it at this time by making sure automatic updates is turned off. To do so:

  Right click on the My Computer Icon: 

Click the automatic updates tab. 

Uncheck “keep my computer updated” OR

If you don’t see that check box

Click on “Turn Off Automatic Updates”

Click Ok. 

 

Steps to Take if You Install the Patch

The way to alleviate the Pop-Up blocking issue is to do the following steps within Internet Explorer.  You can also call Westlaw's Customer and Technical Support Representative 24 hours a day at 1-800-WESTLAW.Follow Steps A, and B or C to alleviate any issues: (Affected users will also be notified and of steps when they sign-on to Westlaw.)

A) Add westlaw.com as a trusted site: 

Click Tools. 

Click Internet Options. 

Access the Security tab. 

Click the Trusted sites Web Content Zone. 

Click the Sites... button. 

Type westlaw.com in Add this web site to the zone. (This fixes Find&Print as well.) 

Click Add. 

Type westcheck.com in Add this web site to the zone. 

Click Add. 

Click Ok.

B) Add westlaw.com to the list of allowed pop-up sites: This will allow pop-up boxes only from designated sites. 

Go to the Tools menu. 

Click Pop-up Blocker. 

Choose Pop-up Blocker Settings... from the Pop-up Blocker sub menu. 

Add westlaw.com in Address of web site to allow. 

Click Add. 

Add westcheck.com in Address of web site to allow. 

Click Add. 

Click Close.

C) Turn off pop-up blocking: This will allow any and all pop-up boxes. 

Go to the Tools menu. 

Choose Pop-up Blocker. 

Choose Turn Off Pop-up Blocker from the Pop-up Blocker sub menu.
