East Bay Firm Retires Novell, Simplifies Servers

In the early days of PC Networking, Novell dominated as the choice for Networks and Servers.  As Microsoft servers became increasingly competitive for added capabilities such as email, vertical applications, and remote access, Networks were forced into a mixed system mode.  Realizing their Novell server was well beyond its serviceable life and needing to put a new replacement server on-line to replace it, this firm migrated to a Microsoft Windows 2003 Server.  iN so doing, they standardizing around Microsoft Server and simplified their network environment.

BOC Builds Highly Fault Tolerant Server

A server isn't just another PC.  BOC built this server with several levels of fault tolerance, meaning a single failure such as a crashed hard disk won't take the whole network down or destroy all of the firm's data.  Redundant disk arrays, separate data and system partitions, and a robust backup system with an extensive tape rotation cycle are some of the ways BOC designs a system to protect documents and data.

Standardized Network Operating System

All the servers now use the same Network Operating System.  This greatly eases the administration of the network.  Previously, frequent problems would creep up with users accounts, printers, and other network resources.  Troubleshooting these network problems was difficult because there were so many possible fault-sources.  Now standardized on Windows and Active Directory, the servers now integrate and synchronize network information between themselves, resulting in a simplified and more stable system.

System More Reliable - Fewer Problems Results in Greater Up-Time and Labor Savings

The migration went without a hitch.  Staff returned to work the Monday after cut-over and were immediately able to resume their work.  Now the network is far more stable and the nagging problems that used to crop up frequently are virtually eliminated.  The firm has consequently been able to save money on labor by reducing maintenance costs and emergency response calls.  Productivity and moral among employees is also improved.

BOC offers hands-on Express Demo Classes now with MCLE credit.  Served with breakfast or Lunch.
